On the final day of every legislative session, crowds fill the Senate floor to watch Senate President Brad Owen bring the session to a close with a final, long-awaited rap of his gavel -- until this year, when he handed the gavel to Senate President Pro Tem Margarita Prentice. It was a gracious gesture and a warm moment as the retiring Sen. Prentice gaveled the last regular session Sine Die of her long and historic career.

Dear Friends and neighbors:
Eight weeks of session and two major deadlines in this year’s legislative calendar have passed. Bills not voted on by March 7th are no longer active but can be considered again next year. Now the bills have to make it out of the committees by Friday, the 25th and then the full Senate by Tuesday, April 12th before the governor can sign any of them into law. You can follow the progress of all bills here.

Dear Friends and neighbors:
This is the end of the 6th week of a 105 day session and the first deadline, commonly referred to as a 'cutoff,' is today. Bills that did not have enough votes to get out of committee will not see any further action. The next two weeks begin another important phase of the legislative process. The next cut off is March 7th - the last day for the House and Senate to vote on their own bills. The committee process will begin again with the Senate hearing House bills until another cut off on March 25th.
